Dear Parents,

Happy Valentine’s Day!

President’s Day Holiday: There will be no school next Monday Feb. 20th because of President’s Day.

Math: We will continue with time, money, place value plus review the concepts learned thus far.

Spelling Bee: The spelling Bee for South Elementary will be held on Feb. 27th. The test to determine the winners of our class who will go to the school spelling bee will be given this Thursday February 17th.

Spelling: Watch for spelling words to come home today.
The test will be on Thursday.

Science Fair: The South Elementary Science Fair will be held on Thursday March 22nd. Rules, etc., were sent home last Tuesday to those who are participating.

Language: We will work with nouns, contractions and alphabetical order.

Grandparents Program: Just a reminder that the program for our Grandparents will be today Monday February 13th at 1:30 in the school gym. Parents and family members are invited to attend as well. The students have worked hard on songs, poems and a dance. Help me assure your child that if their grandparent can’t come that it is okay.
Sometimes grandparents just can’t make it and that is fine. Some have to work, some live too far away, and some have other responsibilities. Although we’d like them to join us, we certainly understand.
Hopefully we’ll see you at the program.
Thanks for helping furnish refreshments. Refreshments make the program nicer. If there are any refreshments left over, we’ll save them and have them for our Valentine’s Party on the 14th.

Thanks for your help and support!

Sincerely,
Brenda Haight

February 6th Newsletter

February 6, 2012

Dear Parents,

It’s good to be back from the Gifted and Talented Conference in Salt Lake this past week. I learned information and strategies which I will be able to use in the classroom. It was a very beneficial conference.

Math: We will work with time, continue with money, place value plus review the concepts learned thus far.
I gave the students the posttest on money last week. I attached it to the pretest they took. It is exciting to see how much they learned. I will send the tests home this week.

Spelling: The spelling words this week contain “r” controlled vowels. Watch for spelling words to come home today. The test will be on Thursday.

Science Fair: The South Elementary Science Fair will be held on Friday March 22nd. Registrations need to be in no later than Monday February 6th. Your child can begin preparing for it by thinking of a question they would like to learn the answer to.

Valentine‘s Party: Our class Valentine’s Party will be held on this Tuesday Feb. 14th . Your child may bring his/her Valentines anytime but we won’t pass them out until that day. I sent a list of the student’s names home last Friday. Hopefully you received it.

Language: We will work with contractions, possessives, continue to work with prefixes and suffixes, root words, as well as the silent e rule.

Grandparents Program: Just a reminder that the program for our Grandparents will be next Monday February 13th at 1:30 in the school gym. Parents and family members are invited to attend as well. The students are working hard on songs, poems and a dance. They should have their parts memorized for today. Help me assure your child that if their grandparent can’t come that it is okay. Sometimes grandparents just can’t make it and that is fine. Some have to work, some live too far away, and some have other responsibilities. Although we’d like them to join us, we certainly understand.
I’ll send home a food assignment today to help with refreshments for our Grandparent’s program…(if you are able to help). Let me know if this is a problem for you.
Parents, if any of you can help decorate on Thursday after school or Friday after school, please let me know. I could use the help.

Pretend Birthday: We will celebrate Olivia’s pretend birthday on Friday February 10th.

Thanks for your help and support!

Sincerely,
Brenda Haight

Dear Parents,

Last Friday was the half-way mark of the school year. This year is sure passing quickly. I’m afraid that the school year will be over before I am ready to let your children move on. They’re wonderful! What a special class we have!

Math: We have begun our money unit. From the pretest I gave the students, it is apparent that the students seem to either know money already or they don’t. The students need to know the names of the coins: penny, nickel, dime, quarter, half dollar and be able to recognize them from either the front or back of the coin. They also need to be able to tell how much each coin is worth and count change up to $1.00. Please work with your child on this and we will work at school as well. Any extra practice you can give you child will be great!
For those students who already know money, I have some higher-order thinking activities on money they will be able to do during our math time.

Language: We will work with silent “e” and start on prefixes and suffixes.

Spelling: Watch for spelling words to come home today. The test will be on Thursday.

Grandparent’s Program: Just a reminder that our Grandparent’s Program will be held on Monday Feb. 13th at 1:30 p.m. in the gym. Family and friends are invited to attend, too. We have a good start on learning the songs and poems. It should be a wonderful program. Please let your child’s grandparents know of this date if you think they may be able to attend.
Also, would you let your child know which of his/her grandparents will be able to attend? We are making invitations, drawing pictures and writing letters to them. This will help your child know how many to make. We want to have something for grandparents who are attending.

Maps: We will continue our unit on maps this week.

Progress Reports: Progress reports will be coming home next week or the end of this week. Watch for them. The students are all doing well. Please contact me if you have any questions about it.

Reading Parents: We really appreciate your faithful support each week in coming to read with the students. You are really helping to make a difference in their reading. Thank you so much.

Science Fair: Just a reminder that the science fair will be on Thursday March 22nd. I’ve encouraged the students to be thinking of a question they are wondering about which could be used for a science fair project. This is a great opportunity for the students to explore and use their curiosity as they learn about the world around them. Sign-up papers will be sent home in a couple of weeks. Thanks!

Spelling Bee: The South Elementary Spelling Bee will be held on Monday February 27th. We will take a spelling test in our class the first week of February to determine who will represent us in the Spelling Bee. A word list was sent home a couple of months ago.

Parents, you are great! I really appreciate your support.

Dear Parents,

This Friday will be the half-way mark of the school year. This year is sure passing quickly. I’m afraid that the school year will be over before I am ready to let your children move on. They’re wonderful! What a special class we have!

Math: You hopefully noticed that I sent home the post test and pretest the students took on place value. I stapled them together. The students did well.

We are beginning money. Please give your child opportunities to practice adding coins that total $1.00 or less. They also need to recognize both the front and back of each coin and know how much the coins are worth. Some of the students already know money concepts and so I have some higher order thinking money activities for them to do while the class is doing our money unit. All students should have fun with this unit.

Language: We will work with silent “e” and start quotation marks.

Martin Luther King Day: There will be no school on Monday, January 16th, because of the Martin Luther King Holiday.

Field Trip: Just a reminder that we will be going on a walking field trip on Wednesday January 11th in the morning. We'll be walking to watch the CCMA presentation of a piano quartet at the Heritage Festival Hall. It should be very enjoyable. Reading parents won't need to come on that day.

Spelling: Look for spelling words to come home today.

Reading Parents: Reading parents please continue to come each week. We appreciate you and your efforts to help us. You are very much needed and appreciated. (On Wednesday of this week, we'll be gone so you don't need to come on that day.)

Grandparent’s Program: Just a reminder that our Grandparents Program will be held on Monday Feb. 13th at 1:30 p.m. in the gym. Family and friends are invited to attend, too. We have a good start on learning the songs and poems. It should be a wonderful program. Please let your child’s grandparents know of this date if you think they may be able to attend.

Science Fair: The science fair for our school will be held on Thursday March 22nd. I encourage all students who are interested to participate. What a great way to get their minds thinking and wondering! Watch for further information to come home.

Maps: We began our unit on maps last week.

Toy Day on Friday was a lot of fun. The students had a ball playing with their toys with the other students. Thanks for letting your child bring something to participate with.

Change of address or phone number: Parents, if you have had a change of address or phone number, would you please let the office know. This will help keep your files current in case of an emergency or if the school needs to contact you for any reason.

Parents, you are great! I really appreciate your support.
