January 9th Newsletter

January 9, 2012

Dear Parents,

This Friday will be the half-way mark of the school year. This year is sure passing quickly. I’m afraid that the school year will be over before I am ready to let your children move on. They’re wonderful! What a special class we have!

Math: You hopefully noticed that I sent home the post test and pretest the students took on place value. I stapled them together. The students did well.

We are beginning money. Please give your child opportunities to practice adding coins that total $1.00 or less. They also need to recognize both the front and back of each coin and know how much the coins are worth. Some of the students already know money concepts and so I have some higher order thinking money activities for them to do while the class is doing our money unit. All students should have fun with this unit.

Language: We will work with silent “e” and start quotation marks.

Martin Luther King Day: There will be no school on Monday, January 16th, because of the Martin Luther King Holiday.

Field Trip: Just a reminder that we will be going on a walking field trip on Wednesday January 11th in the morning. We'll be walking to watch the CCMA presentation of a piano quartet at the Heritage Festival Hall. It should be very enjoyable. Reading parents won't need to come on that day.

Spelling: Look for spelling words to come home today.

Reading Parents: Reading parents please continue to come each week. We appreciate you and your efforts to help us. You are very much needed and appreciated. (On Wednesday of this week, we'll be gone so you don't need to come on that day.)

Grandparent’s Program: Just a reminder that our Grandparents Program will be held on Monday Feb. 13th at 1:30 p.m. in the gym. Family and friends are invited to attend, too. We have a good start on learning the songs and poems. It should be a wonderful program. Please let your child’s grandparents know of this date if you think they may be able to attend.

Science Fair: The science fair for our school will be held on Thursday March 22nd. I encourage all students who are interested to participate. What a great way to get their minds thinking and wondering! Watch for further information to come home.

Maps: We began our unit on maps last week.

Toy Day on Friday was a lot of fun. The students had a ball playing with their toys with the other students. Thanks for letting your child bring something to participate with.

Change of address or phone number: Parents, if you have had a change of address or phone number, would you please let the office know. This will help keep your files current in case of an emergency or if the school needs to contact you for any reason.

Parents, you are great! I really appreciate your support.

Brenda Haight
