I hope you had a wonderful and safe vacation. I did but it is great to be back in school.
Science: We will finish our unit on rocks this week. Watch for the rock folder to come home. We’ve had fun investigating rocks and learning how they are formed.
Leaf Homework: Sent home today are directions on pressing leaves. Please help your child gather and press 10-15 leaves (preferably several varieties and sizes.) They will need to bring them to school by next Wednesday November 3rd. We will be using them for an art/literature project.
Math: In math this week, we will learn about equal and not equal, do more with odd and even numbers, and review the concepts we have learned thus far this year.
The pattern pretest and posttests will be sent home this week. The students did well on their posttest. The pretest is what the students took before we did our unit and the posttest was given last week after we had finished learning about patterns. You can see that the students learned a lot. I will have the students fix their mistakes before they bring them home.
Pen Pals: Our class is going to be pen pals with Mrs. Kathleen Mosdell’s 2nd grade class from East Elementary. This will help the students become more proficient with the friendly letter format. In conjunction with this, we are going on a walking field trip on Thursday to SUU to meet our pen pals and do some activities with them to get to know them. Please sign and return the permission slip by tomorrow Wednesday Oct. 27th. Thank you. If the weather ends up being bad, we will need to reschedule the field trip for a later date. This permission slip will do for then as well. I’ll let you know if that needs to happen. Please have your child dress warm for this day and wear good walking shoes. Thanks!
Progress Reports: Progress reports will be coming home sometime during the next two weeks. Watch for them. If you have questions, please give me a call.
Red Ribbon Week: This week is Red Ribbon Week sponsored by the PTA. The focus of the week is to help the students become more aware of the dangers of drugs. There are different things happening each day:
Tuesday: “Rock Star Day”, Be a Rock Star say NO. Dress like your favorite Rock Star.
Wednesday: Say “Peace Out” to Drugs. Dress Hippie Style.
Thursday: Sports day. “Champions Don’t Use Drugs”. Wear your favorite sports jersey and/or cap.
Friday: Super Hero Day. I have the power to say NO. Dress up like your Hero or favorite Superhero.
Cold Weather: Please see that you student wears a coat or a jacket to school each day. The weather is cooling off. As you know, in Cedar City it can be warm in the morning but by afternoon very cold – especially if the wind blows.
Green Ribbon Week: Something new this year is Green Ribbon Week. This will be November 5th to November 12th. Saturday November 6th is Family fitness Day at the SUU PE building from 12:00 – 3:00 p.m. South Elementary students get in free and family members have a reduced price of $3.00.
Halloween Party: We will have a Halloween party on Friday afternoon. If you are on the treat committee, you may send your food assignment to school with your child in the morning. Thank you so much for your help.
Drop-off Zone: There is a new Drop-off Zone on the North end of the school along 400 So. by the lower playground. There is absolutely no parking between the signs. You may drop-off and pick up your students here if you wish as well as in front of the school and along the upper playground. Hopefully this will help keep our students safe as they are dropped off to school and picked up.
Well, I think that is all I need to tell you. It was a lot this week. Thank you very much for your help and support.
Sincerely,
Brenda Haight
